At Splatt Farm Gardens, our Little Foragers Forest School in Somerset is growing into something truly special: a space where children (and adults) can learn, play, and reconnect with nature in a way that feels free, joyful and deeply grounding.
Forest School isn’t about classrooms or worksheets.
It’s about muddy hands, curious minds, and learning through real experience.
🌱 What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-led, outdoor learning approach that builds confidence, resilience and creativity through time spent in nature.
Here at Splatt, we weave this with our values of:
✨ Wellbeing of individuals
✨ Wellbeing of community
✨ Wellbeing of the Earth
Children are invited to explore, take safe risks, build, create and simply be.
🪵 What We’ve Been Creating
This season has been full of energy, growth and making…
We’ve built a summer house den! It's a cosy base for storytelling, shelter and imaginative play. There are now handmade wooden toys and structures for climbing, balancing and exploring. A hammock sways gently between the trees, perfect for rest and reflection.
We’ve even created a grief shrine: a quiet, meaningful space to honour emotions and the natural cycles of life. Because at Splatt, we believe emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical play.
🍓 Learning Through the Land
Forest School here is deeply connected to food, seasons and the land itself.
We’ve planted pick-your-own beds with raspberries, blueberries, redcurrants and cranberries, giving children the chance to harvest and taste directly from the earth.
Already this year, we’ve shared the joy of eating our first harvests: sweet strawberries, fresh asparagus, and even some surprise volunteer parsnips.
There’s something powerful about a child picking food they’ve seen grow, it creates a lifelong connection to nature and nourishment.
🔥 Real Skills, Real Experiences
Our recent volunteer weekend of 2026 brought this vision to life in the most beautiful way.
Together, we:🌱 Planted and tended the gardens🪵 Built structures and play spaces🔥 Cooked meals in a cauldron over the fire🥕 Shared food, stories and laughter as a community
This is the heart of Forest School — not just learning skills, but experiencing community, cooperation and connection.
🌼 Nature, Emotions & Wellbeing
We’re also expanding into nature-based emotional wellbeing, including a retreat focused on emotional regulation and connection through nature.
Alongside this, we’ve been:
🌿 Creating fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha
🍃 Drying nettles and dandelions for teas and tinctures
Children naturally become curious about these processes: learning about health, gut wellbeing, and the gifts of the wild.
🧒 Family Days & Community Connection
We’ve loved seeing children already playing freely in the field, climbing, exploring, imagining.
Because of this, we’re now offering family gathering days on Saturdays, where children and parents can experience the land together.
It’s relaxed, welcoming, and rooted in simple joys.
🌳 Why Forest School Matters
In a world that can feel fast, digital and disconnected, Forest School offers something different:
🌱 Confidence through real experience🌿 Emotional resilience through nature🪵 Practical skills for life
💚 A sense of belonging to land and community
It’s not just education.
It’s remembering how to be human in relationship with the Earth.
