Splatt Farm Gardens: Cultivating Sustainability

Updated: Jun 19

In the heart of rural Somerset, Splatt Farm Gardens has blossomed into a serene sanctuary where nature thrives and sustainability is at the core of everything we do. One of the keystones of our journey towards a greener future is our Community Vegetable Garden—a lush oasis of vibrant life and a testament to our commitment to nourishing both the land and the community.

A Sustainable Vision

Our journey towards sustainability is fueled by a simple yet profound vision: to cultivate a thriving ecosystem where soil health and biodiversity are paramount. Our no-dig gardening approach is central to this vision, as it focuses on protecting and nourishing the natural life of the soil. By doing so, we encourage the flourishing of essential components like worms, beneficial bacteria, and fungi. These soil allies work in harmony to enrich the soil, making it more fertile and improving its structure—a win-win for both the environment and our crops.

A Haven for Biodiversity

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our vegetable garden. We're working closely with the council to diversify the grasses, plant additional hedgerows, and create more ponds on our land. These endeavors aim to create thriving habitats for local wildlife, further enhancing the biodiversity of our site.

Planting Seeds of Change

Since our humble beginnings in 2020, we've been busy planting the seeds of change—literally and figuratively. To date, we've nurtured and planted around 550 trees, each one a testament to our dedication to a greener future. These trees provide not only shade and beauty but also contribute to the carbon sequestration vital for mitigating climate change.

In our vegetable garden, we've grown an impressive variety of over 50 different vegetables, each one carefully tended to with the utmost care and dedication. The fruits of our labor have found their way to our own tables, supplied family and friends, and even found a home in local places like the community shop in Spaxton, Blackmore Farm, and the delightful Foxy Bean Cafe.

A Vision for the Future

As we look ahead to 2024 and beyond, our ambitions reach even higher. Our dream is to transform into a community-owned vegetable growing cooperative—a place where anyone can become a member and enjoy the fruits of this sustainable endeavor. Members will have the option to pay for membership and/or exchange work for shares, granting them a veg box filled with fresh, locally grown produce every week.

If you share our passion for sustainable agriculture and community-driven initiatives, we invite you to get involved in this project. Whether you're ready to dive in now or want to join us in the future, your contribution will play a vital role in shaping the future of Splatt Farm Gardens.
